Zhenqing Temple

Restored Taoist temple complex amid central Kunming's modern streets.

Zhenqing Temple is one of central Kunming's better old-surviving religious complexes, a Taoist site whose halls, courtyards and carved details now sit tightly among modern streets. It rewards slow looking: rooflines, incense burners and painted woodwork give you a quieter register of the city than the shopping streets around it.

The temple is not as famous as the Golden Temple or Bamboo Temple, but that makes it useful for travellers staying in the centre. It is a compact heritage stop, easy to fold into a walk through old Kunming rather than a half-day excursion.
