Western Hills Forest Reserve, or Xishan, is one of Kunming's strongest outdoor sights. The forested ridge rises above Dianchi Lake and combines paths, temples, carved grottoes, viewpoints, and the sense of leaving the city for a mountain landscape without travelling far.
The area is broad enough to reward a half-day rather than a quick viewpoint stop. Dragon Gate is the classic highlight, but the real appeal is the sequence of lake views, shaded climbs, and religious sites that make Xishan feel like Kunming's natural balcony.
