The long, narrow Haigeng peninsula divides the inner basin of Dianchi Lake from the larger outer body of water. Along its top runs Haigeng Park — a four-kilometre stretch of beach, lawn, and wetland that is the most popular weekend escape for central Kunming. Locals come for picnics, kite-flying, and to feed the migrant gulls that crowd here in winter.
The park is the easiest place in the city to actually reach the shore of Dianchi: most of the rest of the lakeshore is industrial or fenced off. Bus 24 from the centre or a short taxi gets you here. The Yunnan Nationalities Village and Museum sit at the southern end of the peninsula and combine with Haigeng into a half-day on the lake.
