Pingyang is a county-level destination south of Wenzhou, with its main towns at Kunyang and Aojiang. The urban centre is useful rather than beautiful, but the county around it has enough substance to justify a detour if you are already travelling through southern Zhejiang.
The strongest reason to come is the contrast packed into a small area. Offshore, the Nanji Islands have beaches, clear water, seafood, and protected marine life. Inland, South Yandang Mountain offers crags, streams, temples, and old paths. In the hills, Shunxi Ancient Village keeps a quieter architectural story alive.
Pingyang is not a polished international stop. English is limited, distances inside the county are larger than they look on a map, and Nanji usually needs a ferry plan rather than a casual afternoon. With a little effort, though, it gives you a useful slice of coastal Zhejiang beyond Hangzhou and the better-known water towns.
