Fancy Bazaar

The main wholesale and street-market district of central Guwahati, running west from Pan Bazaar to the river. Fancy Bazaar is a chaos of cloth shops, electronics traders, sweet stalls, hardware, and roadside vendors. It is also the city's oldest Muslim-majority quarter — the Jama Masjid is in the middle of it — and one of the better places to eat cheap kebabs, biryani and Mughlai sweets after dark.

The market is dense and not particularly tourist-friendly, but anyone interested in seeing Guwahati outside its temple and museum face will find an afternoon here rewarding. The riverfront just south, with the Sukreswar Ghat and Northbrook Gate, gives a quick escape to open space.
