Pan Bazaar

The old commercial heart of Guwahati, just north of the railway station and west of Dighalipukhuri. Pan Bazaar is a dense grid of narrow streets crammed with bookshops, second-hand stalls, photo studios, sweet shops and small temples. The road running west from the main intersection — College Hostel Road — is locally known as "Book Street" and lined with kiosks selling everything from school textbooks to second-hand fiction in English, Bengali and Assamese.

This is also where you find Cotton College (now Cotton University), one of the oldest in the northeast, and the leafy public spaces of Curzon Hall and Latasil Field. Wander here in the late afternoon for the city's most intact slice of pre-mall commercial life. Combine with a paddleboat on Dighalipukhuri.
