Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra

A large cultural complex on the south side of the city named after the 15th-century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankaradeva, who shaped Assamese language, literature, dance, drama and the Vaishnavite Bhakti movement that still defines much of rural Assam. The complex is enormous and a little theme-park-like — there is a heritage museum, an open-air theatre, an artisans' village, a folk art museum, and a children's park — but the central museum is genuinely excellent and the only place outside of village namghars (prayer halls) where you can see Sankaradeva's tradition presented coherently.

Allow at least two hours, more if you take in a performance. Borgeet (devotional song) and Sattriya dance shows are held in the evening on weekends. Closed Mondays. The complex is at Panjabari, about 8 km southeast of the centre — take an auto or app cab.
