Navagraha Temple

The Navagraha — "nine planets" — Temple sits atop Chitrachal Hill in eastern Guwahati and is dedicated to the nine celestial bodies of Hindu astronomy: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Inside the circular brick chamber, nine lingams are arranged in a ring, with Surya at the centre.

The temple was historically the centre of astronomical and astrological study in Assam — Pragjyotishpura, the ancient name of Guwahati, means "city of eastern light". The current structure dates from the 18th-century Ahom rebuilding after lightning destroyed the original. The drive up gives good views over the city and Brahmaputra. Quick visit, about half an hour. Combine with a stop at Latasil Field or Dighalipukhuri on the way back.
