Built by the Gaekwads in the 19th century and named after one of the Maharajas, Khanderao Market is one of the most architecturally distinguished market buildings in Gujarat — an arched, columned structure that looks more like a palace than a place to buy vegetables. Inside, the market continues to operate much as it has for over a century: textile stalls, spices, jewellery, and fresh produce spread through the vaulted halls.
The building is on Chamaraja Road in the old city, within walking distance of Sursagar Lake. It is worth visiting for the architecture even if you have no intention of buying anything. The area around it is good for street food, particularly during the day. Best visited in the morning when it is most lively.
