A natural lake in the heart of old Vadodara, Sursagar was enlarged and formalised by the Gaekwads in the 18th century. A large statue of Shiva stands on an island at its centre. The lake is a gathering point for Vadodara's residents in the early evening — families, walkers, snack stalls — and gives a good picture of the city's relaxed tempo when the heat begins to ease.
The surrounding lanes of the old city are worth exploring: the bazaar area near Mandvi Gate, with its textile traders and sweet shops, is a short walk from the lake. In October and November during Navratri, the lake and the adjacent grounds are among the venues for the evening Garba dances.
