The main university building, designed by Robert Chisholm in 1881 and originally built as the Baroda College, is one of the finest pieces of Indo-Saracenic architecture in western India -- a vast brick and stone structure crowned by what was, on completion, the largest dome in Asia. The university was formally founded in 1949 from this and other Gaekwad-era colleges; the Faculty of Fine Arts is among India's most respected. The campus is open and walkable, and the surrounding Pratapgunj neighbourhood has good chai and bookshops.
