Chennai's Armenian Church was built in 1712 and rebuilt in 1772, when the Armenian merchant community was an important part of the city's trading world. Its churchyard holds the graves of hundreds of Armenians, including Haroutiun Shmavonian, publisher of the first Armenian periodical.
The belfry, with its six large bells, is the church's most distinctive feature. It is a quiet but meaningful stop in George Town's layered colonial and mercantile history.
