St Andrew's Kirk, completed in 1821, is one of the most architecturally refined buildings in Chennai — a neo-classical church built to serve the city's Scottish community, closely modelled on St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. The circular colonnaded design, with its white stucco exterior and blue-and-gold interior, has been called one of the finest examples of neo-classical architecture in India.
The interior is particularly fine: a shallow dome painted a deep blue covers the circular nave, with stars painted on the ceiling. The stained glass and box pews are largely original. The church is still active, with services in English, and is open to visitors on weekday mornings.
St Andrew's is in Egmore, a short walk from Chennai Central station and the Government Museum. It's often overlooked in favour of the more famous colonial buildings, but the quality of the architecture rewards the detour.
