Accessible active volcano you can drive to the crater rim

The most-visited volcano in West Java, and one of the most accessible in all of Indonesia — you can drive almost to the rim of the main Kawah Ratu crater. The name means "upturned boat" in Sundanese, describing the volcano's profile from the Bandung plain below. At 2,084 metres, the air is cool and smells of sulphur; the crater itself is a wide, grey-white bowl with active fumaroles venting steam. Several smaller craters are a short walk away. Go early to beat the crowds and the vendors, and bring a jacket. The volcano is still active — it has erupted minor phreatic explosions as recently as the 2010s, and access to the main crater is sometimes restricted.
