The best museum in Indonesia and one of the finest in Southeast Asia. Its collection covers the full arc of Indonesian civilisation: Hindu-Buddhist bronze statuary, Javanese gold jewellery, an unrivalled ceramics collection, and ethnographic displays from all of the archipelago's major cultural groups. The elephant statue in front — a gift from the King of Siam in 1871 — gives the museum its popular name, Museum Gajah (Elephant Museum).
