Taman Fatahillah

Colonial-era square at the heart of Old Batavia

The cobblestoned central square of Kota Tua (Old Town), once the administrative heart of Dutch Batavia. The former City Hall, now the Jakarta History Museum, dominates the south side; the Wayang Museum and Fine Arts Museum flank the other edges. Street performers and vendors fill the square on weekends, and you can rent colorful bikes to ride around the area.

Nearby, look for Si Jagur, the old Portuguese cannon said to be a fertility symbol, and the Gereja Sion, Jakarta's oldest surviving church (1695). The Glodok Chinatown district is a short walk south — worth combining into the same half-day.
