Sunda Kelapa

Ancient harbour where traditional wooden schooners still dock

The old harbour of Jakarta, at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, has been a trading port since at least the 12th century. Today it is one of the few places in the world where you can still watch traditional Bugis pinisi schooners — hand-built wooden sailing vessels from Sulawesi — being loaded and unloaded by hand. The ships bring timber, rattan, and other goods from across the archipelago and leave with manufactured goods for the outer islands.

Walk along the quay and you can board some of the vessels to look around. The fish market alongside the harbour operates from the early hours and is chaotic and photogenic. Combine with the Maritime Museum in the adjacent converted warehouse and the old town at Kota Tua a short walk south.
