A small but well-curated city collection housed in a Kisho Kurokawa building from 1988 — one of the architect's clearest expressions of his "symbiosis" theme, with traditional Japanese tiled forms colliding with a postmodern stone-clad exterior. The collection covers four areas: the Mexican muralists (Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Orozco) thanks to an early benefactor's enthusiasm; the Ecole de Paris with strong holdings of Modigliani and Soutine; Japanese contemporary; and Aichi-born artists.
Special exhibitions run alongside the permanent collection and often pull in significant Western loans. The museum sits in Shirakawa Park beside the Science Museum, and a single afternoon comfortably takes in both. Closed Mondays.
