Nagoya Tosho-gu

Nagoya Tosho-gu is a small Shinto shrine within Nagoya Castle's outer precinct, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (deified after death as Tosho Daigongen). It was founded in 1619 by Ieyasu's son Yoshinao, the first Owari Tokugawa lord, and at its peak was one of the most lavish provincial Tosho-gu in the country.

The original main hall was destroyed in the 1945 firebombing; the current structure is a reconstruction of a simpler outer building. It is still a peaceful spot, especially in cherry-blossom season when the surrounding park (Nagoya Tosho-gu Sai-en) opens its grounds. A festival on 17 April reenacts the original 17th-century procession. Worth a stop on a castle visit.
