Dogo Onsen

Dogo Onsen is Ehime's most famous hot spring district, just east of central Matsuyama. The Dogo Onsen Honkan is the landmark: a many-tiered wooden bathhouse where the act of bathing feels ceremonial rather than merely practical.

The surrounding arcade is touristy but fun, with snacks, ryokan, souvenir shops, and evening visitors wandering in yukata. Go early or late to avoid the thickest crowds, and check which baths are open during restoration work.

A story
Dogo Onsen claims a history of around three thousand years, and the wooden Honkan bathhouse became one of the models people associate with the bathhouse in Spirited Away. Whether or not you care about the film connection, the building feels like a stage set for public bathing as civic ritual.
