Ishite-ji

Ishite-ji is one of the easiest Shikoku pilgrimage temples to visit, close to Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama. The temple complex includes an old gate, halls, statues, and a slightly eccentric atmosphere that rewards wandering.

It is a good place to understand the pilgrimage without committing to weeks on the road. You will often see white-clad pilgrims stopping here before continuing around the island.

A story
Ishite-ji is temple 51 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, and its name means "stone-hand temple." The legend behind it involves a reborn child clutching a stone, one of the many strange stories that make the pilgrimage feel less tidy than a simple temple circuit.
