Enmyōji

Temple 53 on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, north of central Matsuyama.

Enmyōji is Temple 53 on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, sitting in the northern part of Matsuyama rather than in the hot-spring core around Dogo. Pilgrims stop here between Taisanji and the city temples, so it offers a quieter glimpse of the henro route as it threads through ordinary neighborhoods.

The temple is compact, with the familiar rhythm of gate, main hall, Daishi hall, incense, and white-clad pilgrims moving through. It is not Matsuyama's grandest religious site, but it is worthwhile if you are following the pilgrimage sequence or want a less staged temple visit.
