Jodoji Temple

Shikoku pilgrimage temple in Matsuyama, the 49th stop on the island’s 88-temple route.

Jodoji is Temple 49 on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, tucked into Matsuyama's eastern side rather than the castle-and-onsen core most visitors see first. It is a working pilgrimage temple, so the atmosphere depends as much on chanting, white-clad walkers, and quiet routine as on architecture.

The temple is most rewarding if you are following even a small piece of the henro route. It gives Matsuyama a different rhythm from Dogo Onsen and the castle hill, and it is a good reminder that Shikoku's pilgrimage is woven through ordinary neighbourhoods as well as remote mountains.
