A Buddhist temple of the Ji sect situated in the Dogo district near the famous onsen. Hogon-ji is small and rarely crowded compared to the main shrine and bath complex, making it a good place to sit quietly for a few minutes and absorb the atmosphere of this ancient hot spring neighborhood.
The temple grounds have some old stone markers and lanterns and a general sense of age and calm. Worth a brief stop if you are wandering the backstreets around Dogo Onsen between baths.
