Manuha Pagoda

Bagan temple famous for enormous seated and reclining Buddhas squeezed into tight chambers

Manuha Pagoda is remembered less for a soaring silhouette than for the feeling inside: huge Buddha images pressed into chambers that seem deliberately too small for them. The result is intimate, almost claustrophobic, and quite different from the open plains and grand exterior views that define much of Bagan.

Tradition links the temple to King Manuha of Thaton, who was brought to Bagan as a captive in the eleventh century. Whether you take the story literally or not, the compressed space gives the pagoda a mood of confinement and dignity that makes it linger in the memory.
