The covered Madhat Pasha Souq runs east-west through the Old City along the line of the Roman Via Recta — the "Street Called Straight" of the New Testament. The roofed section is about 600 metres long and lined with shops selling clothing, household goods, textiles and tools.
The souq is less tourist-oriented than the Hamidiyah and more about everyday Damascene life. The architecture is Ottoman in date but the basic axis is Roman, and at the eastern end the road continues out as Straight Street into the Christian quarter.
