The traditional spice and seed market of Damascus, running south from the Umayyad Mosque to the Roman gate of Bab al-Saghir. The covered alley is lined with stalls selling cardamom, sumac, dried limes, saffron, rose petals, candied fruits, mastic and the spice mixes that the surrounding khans were built to trade.
Several of the great Ottoman caravanserais open off the alley — Khan As'ad Pasha (see separate entry), Khan Sulayman Pasha and the smaller Khan Suq al-Harir. The smells alone are worth the visit; the prices are still very low by international standards.
A natural extension of any Hamidiyah Souq walk.
