Umayyad Mosque

One of the oldest and grandest mosques in the world

One of the oldest and largest mosques in the world, built in the early 8th century on the site of a Roman temple and a Christian basilica. The vast courtyard is flanked by three minarets and decorated with gold and green mosaics, especially striking on the main portal and the raised treasury building. Inside the prayer hall, a silver shrine is said to contain the head of John the Baptist.

Before entering the mosque you pass Saladin's Mausoleum, included in the admission price. Take time to walk the full courtyard and then sit on the carpets in the prayer hall to absorb the atmosphere. Modest dress required; robes are available at the entrance.
