Bab Touma ("The Gate of Thomas") is both the northeastern gate of the Old City and the name of the surrounding quarter — the historic Christian neighbourhood of Damascus. Narrow stone-paved alleys, jasmine-covered walls, and a quieter pace than the rest of the Old City make this one of the most enjoyable areas for a wander.
Several churches stand within a short walk: the Mariamite Cathedral (Greek Orthodox), the Cathedral of Saint George and the small Armenian Catholic Cathedral. Tucked among them are family-run restaurants, small wine bars (legally permitted in this quarter even when not elsewhere) and the old houses that have been turned into boutique hotels.
The gate itself is set back behind a small square and decorated with worn carvings; the road through it leads out to the modern city. Best explored in the early evening when residents come out.
