Bab al-Faradis is one of the seven ancient gates in the Roman walls of Damascus. The name means "Gate of Paradises", probably a reference to the gardens of the Ghouta plain that lay just outside the wall here. The current gate is a 13th-century Ayyubid rebuilding of the Roman original, with its arched passage still in use as a pedestrian thoroughfare.
The gate sits at the northern edge of the Old City, just behind the Sayyida Ruqayya Mosque. A walk along the line of the walls from here, past Bab al-Salam and Bab Tuma, gives an excellent sense of the Old City's medieval shape.
