2-28 Peace Memorial Park

Memorial park to the victims of the 1947 February 28 incident

This central public park opposite Taipei Main Station carries the heaviest historical weight in Taipei. It is named for the February 28 incident of 1947, when the brutal Nationalist suppression of a popular protest at the police station here killed between 18,000 and 28,000 Taiwanese in the weeks that followed — the trauma that opened the long period of Kuomintang martial law, the "White Terror".

A modern memorial — three vertical concrete pylons supporting a black granite cube — stands in the centre of the park, and a small 228 Memorial Museum in the park's former radio station carries the historical exhibition. The surrounding park is shaded by old trees and has a small Chinese pavilion lake at its northern end. Free entry.
