Presidential Office Building

Japanese-era red-brick palace, still the seat of the Republic of China government

Address 122 Chongqing South Road Sec 1, Taipei
Website https://www.president.gov.tw

The Presidential Office Building is one of the grandest pieces of Japanese-era architecture in Taipei: a five-storey red-and-white brick palace with a central clock tower, designed by Uheiji Nagano and completed in 1919 as the headquarters of the Japanese colonial government. After 1949 it was repurposed as the seat of the Republic of China government in exile, a role it still holds.

Guided tours of the interior — the marble main hall, the conference rooms, the president's reception room — are offered free of charge on weekday mornings (passport required, no booking necessary) and on one Saturday a month. Outside tour times, the building can be appreciated only from outside; the floodlit facade after dark is the best view.
