National Theater and National Concert Hall

Twin classical Chinese performance halls in the CKS Memorial plaza

Facing each other across the immense plaza in front of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, the National Theater and National Concert Hall are a matched pair of grand performance halls built in 1987 in the same Chinese imperial-palace style as the memorial itself: yellow tile, red columns, sweeping multi-tiered roofs. The interiors are however thoroughly modern; the auditoria are among the best in East Asia for acoustics and sightlines.

Between them they host the major events of Taipei's performing arts year: Taiwanese opera, classical music, contemporary dance, international touring orchestras. Ticket prices are reasonable by international standards. Even without a ticket, the gardens around the halls are pleasant and the buildings are floodlit at night.
