Huashan was originally a 1914 Japanese sake distillery; for most of the 20th century it produced Taiwan's domestic wines and brandies, before falling derelict in the late 1980s. The old red-brick warehouses, water towers, and steel-trussed bottling halls were rehabilitated in the early 2000s into a creative arts park covering several blocks just east of Taipei Main Station.
Today it is one of central Taipei's best places to lose an afternoon — a permanent rota of small temporary exhibitions, a couple of small theatres, a craft and design market, half a dozen restaurants and bars, and a craft cinema. The atmospherics are excellent, especially at dusk when the brick warehouses are lit from below.
