Boztepe

Boztepe is a hilltop district above the city centre, reached by a short cable car ride or a steep walk, that provides the best panoramic views over Trabzon and the Black Sea. Tea gardens scatter across the hillside — simple places with plastic chairs and a spectacular view where Trabzon residents come in the evenings to drink tea, eat roasted corn, and watch the sun set over the water.

The views are genuinely impressive: the city spreads across its coastal ridges below, the port cranes visible against the sea, and on clear days the Kaçkar Mountains rise dramatically to the south. The cable car from the lower station is cheap and worth taking for the ride. In summer, Boztepe becomes one of the most pleasant places in a city without many open green spaces, and the tea garden culture — unhurried, sociable, and firmly local — gives a good sense of everyday Trabzon life.

A story
Boztepe's tea gardens were established in the early 20th century when the Ottoman government began experimenting with tea cultivation on the Black Sea coast. The region had exactly the right combination of rainfall, humidity, and mild winters, and the experiment succeeded beyond all expectations. Today Turkey is one of the world's largest tea consumers and producers, and the hillsides above Trabzon are the heart of the industry.
