Gulbahar Hatun Mosque and Tomb

The Gülbahar Hatun Mosque complex stands near the west gate of the old city and consists of a mosque built in the 16th century and the elaborately decorated tomb of Gülbahar Hatun, mother of Sultan Selim I, who died in Trabzon in 1505. The mosque is simple and elegant with a single dome; the tomb next to it is more ornate, with carved marble panels and a tiled interior.

The complex is named after the woman buried here, which is unusual — most Ottoman religious foundations are named for their male benefactors. The location in the west end of the old city means it is often visited on the way to or from the Hagia Sophia. The tomb draws visitors who come to pray and the site has a contemplative atmosphere distinct from the city's more touristy sites.

A story
Gülbahar Hatun was the mother of Sultan Selim I, who conquered Egypt and Syria and took the title of Caliph. She died in Trabzon in 1505 while her son was still governor of the province, years before his spectacular rise. Her tomb is one of the most elaborate in the Black Sea region and stands in marked contrast to the relatively modest mosque she had built — the tomb was clearly where the real devotion went.
