Yenicuma Mosque is one of Trabzon's most interesting layered buildings, originally a Byzantine church dedicated to St Eugenios and later converted into a mosque. That transformation is visible in the proportions and masonry, giving the site a depth that a newer mosque would not have.
It is a worthwhile stop for anyone tracing Trabzon's Greek, Byzantine, and Ottoman past. Visit respectfully outside prayer times if possible, and look for the way the building's older church form survives beneath its Islamic use. Few cities on the Black Sea show their history in such compressed form.
