Santa Maria Church is a modest but worthwhile stop in central Trabzon, especially because it shows a side of the Black Sea port that is easy to miss among Ottoman, Byzantine, and modern Turkish landmarks. Its stone exterior and quiet courtyard speak to the city's older Catholic and foreign merchant communities.
Do not expect a grand cathedral. The appeal is in the contrast: a compact church tucked into the working centre of a city better known for Sumela Monastery and Hagia Sophia. Check access locally, since small active churches can have limited visiting hours.
