Paynesville

Gippsland Lakes boating town facing Raymond Island, with koalas a four-minute ferry ride away

Paynesville is a low-key boating town on the Gippsland Lakes in eastern Victoria. Its waterfront faces Raymond Island across a narrow channel, so the town's daily rhythm is half mainland marina, half island ferry crossing. Boats nose through the canals, pelicans work the jetties, and almost every useful walk ends up back at the water.

The reason to come is not a single monument. It is the easy combination of lake, ferry, koalas, and quiet cycling. Raymond Island is only a few minutes away and has one of Victoria's most reliable short koala walks. Eagle Point and the Mitchell River Silt Jetties add a strange, narrow landform where the river runs out into Lake King on long banks of deposited silt.

Paynesville is best with time outside: walk the Esplanade, cross to Raymond Island, hire a kayak or small boat if the weather is kind, and finish with fish and chips or a drink by the harbour. It is not a big-ticket destination, but if you are already in East Gippsland, it can fill a very good spare day.

Things to Do

Paynesville's sights are water-led. The easy win is Raymond Island, reached by ferry from the Esplanade, while the longer outing is the drive or ride to Eagle Point and the Mitchell River Silt Jetties. Around town, the canals and jetties are the point: walk, cycle, paddle, or get out on the lakes if the weather is settled.
