Třešť

Czech highland town known for handmade nativity scenes, Kafka traces, and nearby Roštejn Castle.

Třešť is a small town in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands between Jihlava and Telč. Most of the year it is quiet, but it has one lovely and very local obsession: handmade nativity scenes, built and rebuilt by families with carved figures, moss, painted backdrops, and miniature landscapes.

That tradition gives the town a reason to exist on a travel map, especially from Christmas into early February when some family nativity scenes open to visitors. Outside the season, the permanent display in Schumpeter's house keeps the story visible, and the old Jewish quarter adds a second thread through the town.

Třešť is not a substitute for nearby Telč or Jihlava if you have never been to either. It is for travellers who like small Czech towns with a particular craft tradition, and it combines well with Roštejn Castle in the forest southwest of town.
