Lohals

Small Langeland harbour village at Denmark's northern tip, edged by swimming coves and birdwatching coast

Lohals is a small harbour village at the northern tip of the island of Langeland in southern Denmark. It is the point from which ferries cross the Langelandsbælt strait to Spodsbjerg on Funen, making it a transit point for travellers as well as a destination in its own right.

The village has a modest harbour used by fishing boats and pleasure craft, and the coastline around it offers good swimming and kayaking. Langeland is a long, narrow island known for good birdwatching — particularly during the autumn raptor migration — and Lohals sits in its most northerly and windswept reaches. The town is quiet and very much off the tourist trail.

Things to Do

Lohals is small enough that an afternoon walk covers most of it. The harbour, the beach to the north of the village, and the woodland of Stoense Skov immediately south are the main natural draws. The ferry to Spodsbjerg on Funen leaves from the harbour and is a pleasant short trip in itself.

For anything more substantial, head south down the length of Langeland — about 50 km from end to end — where the island opens out into a mix of farmland, old manor estates, and quiet beaches. Rudkøbing, halfway down, is the island's only proper town.
