Gudenå Riverfront

The Gudenå river runs through the heart of Randers, and the riverfront has been redeveloped as one of the city's main public spaces. Walking paths run along both banks, passing beneath the Randers Regnskov domes that are built directly over the water — the rainforest sitting on the Gudenå is one of the odder juxtapositions in Danish urban life.

The stretch of river in and around the city is pleasant for an evening walk. Rowing boats and kayaks can be hired near the Regnskov in summer, and the riverbanks have benches and lawns that become popular in good weather. Downstream, the river opens into the wider marshland that leads to Randers Fjord; upstream the valley narrows and the walking becomes more rural in character within a few kilometres.

A story
The Gudenå is Denmark's only river that can genuinely claim to be long — at 158 kilometres, it is the longest river in the country, and the only one that actually flows with enough volume to be used for transport and industry. Randers grew where it did because this was the lowest fordable point on the river, making it a natural location for a medieval market town.
