Randers Fjord stretches north of the city toward the Kattegat, a broad expanse of tidal water, reed beds, and protected wetlands that is one of the finest birdwatching areas in Denmark. The fjord is surrounded by meadows and marshes that flood seasonally, attracting large numbers of wading birds and wildfowl. Herons, white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers, and various species of duck are regular visitors.
The easiest access from Randers is by cycling or driving north along the river, following the Gudenå as it widens toward the fjord mouth. Several paths lead out through the reed beds to observation platforms over the water. Kayaking from Randers down to the fjord and back is a popular half-day trip, and the fjord itself can be explored by canoe or kayak along quieter channels. The journey downstream from the city takes two to three hours at an easy pace.
