Sankt Mortens Kirke (St Martin's Church)

Sankt Mortens Kirke (St Martin's Church) stands at the heart of Randers' old town, a substantial red-brick Gothic structure whose interior rewards a visit. The church has been in continuous use since the medieval period and retains original carved altarpieces, tombstones, and memorial plaques that read as a record of the town's history.

The building's exterior is characteristic of the Jutland Gothic brick tradition — no stone was available locally, so the builders worked in brick with a precision and decorative ambition that makes these churches architecturally distinctive. Inside, the scale is impressive and the light good. The church is open to visitors during the day; services are still held regularly.

A story
Sankt Mortens Kirke is one of the finest medieval brick churches in Jutland, built in stages from the 13th century onward. Its size reflects Randers' medieval prosperity as a market town — it was large enough in the 15th century to be the site of a significant event in Danish Reformation history, when the first Lutheran sermon in Denmark was preached here by Hans Tausen in 1526, sparking a confrontation with Catholic authorities.
