National Museum (Tjóðsavnið)

National collection of Faroese history, archaeology, and ethnography

Tjóðsavnið is the national museum of the Faroe Islands and sits in Hoyvík on the northern edge of Tórshavn. The collections cover Faroese archaeology from the Viking period onwards, the history of the island fisheries, and folk life — including the famous pew-end carvings rescued from the medieval church at Kirkjubøur.

The associated outdoor section preserves the old Hoyvík farm: traditional turf-roofed buildings, a watermill, and a working area showing how a small Faroese farm operated until well into the 20th century. A bus from the centre, or a 30-minute walk uphill.
