Base Sous-Marine

Bordeaux’s enormous wartime submarine base, reused for exhibitions and immersive digital art.

Base Sous-Marine is one of Bordeaux's most imposing twentieth-century structures: a massive concrete submarine base built during the Second World War. Its scale is blunt and unforgettable, a hard-edged contrast to the city's elegant stone facades and wine-trade polish.

Today the bunker is used for exhibitions and immersive art installations, which suit the cavernous interiors surprisingly well. Even if the current show is not your main interest, the building itself is worth seeing for the way Bordeaux has folded a difficult wartime relic into its cultural life.
