CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain

Contemporary art museum in a converted 19th-century colonial warehouse in the Chartrons quarter

The CAPC occupies a remarkable building: the Entrepôt Lainé, a vast neoclassical warehouse built in the early 19th century to store goods arriving from France's colonial trade. The single vast nave — 73 metres long, 22 metres wide, skylit through iron and glass — is one of the most dramatic exhibition spaces in France. The building is worth seeing even if the exhibitions don't interest you.

The permanent collection covers international contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. The CAPC has a strong reputation for programming and regularly mounts ambitious temporary exhibitions. It is in the Chartrons neighbourhood, a short walk north along the riverfront from Place de la Bourse. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month.
