The Tour Pey-Berland is the detached bell tower of the Cathédrale Saint-André, built in the 15th century and named after Archbishop Pey Berland who commissioned it. Standing 50 metres tall and topped by a gilded statue of Notre-Dame d'Aquitaine, it rises above the Place Pey-Berland and is the most recognisable vertical landmark in central Bordeaux.
Climbing the 231 spiral steps earns you one of the best views in the city: the rooftops of the historic centre spread below, the Garonne visible to the east, and the cathedral itself seen from above. The tower is open daily except Mondays; a small entry fee applies. The combined view from here on a clear morning gives a sense of how dense and how complete Bordeaux's 18th-century urban fabric still is.
