Dijon's iron-and-glass covered market was designed in the 1870s by Gustave Eiffel, born a few streets away. The building is a 90-metre rectangle of cast iron arcades enclosing two floors of stalls — Burgundy charcuterie, regional cheeses, produce from the Côte-d'Or, fish from the Saône.
The market operates Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and all day Saturday. Saturday morning is the main event: stalls spill out into the surrounding streets, lunch counters are busy, and the whole town seems to be shopping. Skip the lunch counters in the centre aisle and look for the small bars on the perimeter.
