Rue des Forges

The Rue des Forges is the best surviving stretch of late-medieval and Renaissance Dijon. Number 38, the Hôtel Aubriot, was the birthplace of Hugues Aubriot, the 14th-century provost of Paris who built the Bastille. Number 40, the Maison Milsand, is one of the most ornate Renaissance facades in Burgundy. Number 34, the Maison Maillard, has a sequence of carved panels of saints and angels.

The street is short — five minutes to walk — and best combined with a wander through the surrounding warren of pedestrianised streets, where half-timbered houses lean over the pavement at improbable angles.
